Tales from Hollywood North - part 2 It's been a while since I last wrote on a subject that fascinates me, which is, the film scene in picturesque Vancouver, home to the Olympics in 2010.
I have been immersed in the film and television industry up here in Vancouver for 20 years now, and for most of that time, have been in many movies, TV shows, MOW's and commercials, but always on the lower end of the payscale, which has been okay for me, money doesn't mean that much to me. Spoken by a person who hasn't had very much of the cash for his whole life, but that's not important right now.
However, there is an old line, 'Good things come to those who wait!', and for me, last year, thee wait was over, I finally struck paydirt.
I was booked to do my usual gig - playing a homeless derelict (something I do exceptionally, so well, in fact, that homeless people offer me money whilst working on set), on the set of 'Supernatural', incidentally my favourite TV show, working a scene with both Jensen Ackles and an evil Yorkie (aren't all Yorkie dogs evil? Or am I alone in this apprehension) when I was told that due to the scene I did, I was to be upgraded to actor status, the Holy Grail of Background performers. This meant after 20 years of paying my dues, I was finally able to join the Actors Union and start paying dues, but this time, straight from the wallet. The nice thing about this, that I would be paid double for what I would normally have done for free, which is to play dress-up and get fed, just like when we were all kids.
So, as of now, my lovely agent can now get paid twice as much when she finds me work and as she busts her ass to find me and my fellow performers work, this is the payoff which really makes me smile.
Now, it is the beginning of the season up here, the gigs are finally starting to come in, and I have my first booking, to which I am looking forward immensely.
So, for those who are about to give up on or have given up on chasing their dreams, re-think your decision, good things do happen, usually at times you least expect.
